Certification pathway

UX design has no single industry exam that employers expect. Hiring managers judge designers mainly on their portfolio, so the program is built around five portfolio projects and a capstone case study.

  • FairChild Institute

FairChild Certificate of Completion, UI/UX Design

    Earned through

    • Completing all 10 courses and the capstone
  • Your own

Professional portfolio with five case studies

    Earned through

    • Projects 01 to 05

Fellows who later want an external credential can pursue options such as the Nielsen Norman Group UX Certification. It requires NN/g's own courses and exams, at extra cost.

Prerequisites and requirements

  • Prior experience

None. No design or technical background is needed.

  • Language

    Good written and spoken English.

  • Equipment

A laptop or desktop computer and a reliable internet connection. A phone or tablet alone is not enough for the tools used. Figma's free plan is enough to start.

How learning works at FairChild

  • Fully online and self-paced

Study from anywhere, on your own schedule, through the FairChild learning portal.

  • Learn by doing

Every course ends with practical work, and the projects build a portfolio employers can review.

  • Choose your pace

Finish in 6 months on the accelerated track or spread the work over 12 months.

  • Join the fellows community

Connect with other FairChild fellows working through the same courses.

  • Add mentorship and career support

Pair the program with Guided Mentorship & Career Development, or join through the FairChild Fellowship, for interview preparation and career coaching.

Graduates are prepared to apply for roles such as:
